Pocket Square Tutorial

This tutorial came about because son #2 loves J. Crew.  Hey that rhymes!
Anyway, he is quite the stylish dresser and has very particular ideas about the look for his upcoming nuptials.  He wants the groomsmen donned in J. Crew style, all the way down to the pocket squares.

During his recent visit, we took the opportunity to shop for the needed ties and pocket squares. Wow, expensive.  $60.00 smackers per tie and $25.00 for a 10"x10" pocket square.  Are you kidding me? I realized I can make all eight pocket squares for less than they want for one.
So, we hit the fabric stores, bought six fat quarters of fabric, then came home and proceeded to whip them all up in a couple of days.
Here is how I did it:
1. Trim your fat quarter down to 12"x12". (I made mine slightly larger than the J. Crew version), and press a 1/2 inch hem.

 2. Open your 1/2 " hem and press in half making a narrow 1/4 " hem.

Open that and you will see two definite press lines.

Mark each of the four corners to the 1/4" intersection.

Put your ruler at that point and slice off the corner edge.

Mark the remaining corner intersections, turn up the edge at that point and press.

Then, refold the edges.  First fold at the 1/4", then at the 1/2" line, pressing as you go.  When you finish  folding both edges, you should have a perfect mitered corner.

With that done, put your folded edge under your presser foot.  Notice that I lined the inside edge of the folded hem along the inside edge of the presser foot.  This gave me a nice straight seam as I sewed.

Sew along each edge, carefully holding down the mitered corner as you sew.

I used a wooden skewer to hold it down while I turned the corner.

Continue around each edge and backstitch to finish.

And voila!  A beautiful, custom made 11"x11"pocket square for the stylish man in your life.

Here are all eight finished ready for the wedding party.  Eight for under the price of one.

Very stylish indeed.

Fund Raising

So, lately I have been thinking that I want to do more, share more, be more.  It's funny how when those types of thoughts hit us, voila, opportunity knocks.
One of my favorite blogs posted this and I want to join the giving.
So here is what I'm going to do.
Remember this quilt?

I'm putting it up for auction.
This quilt is a perfect size for a lucky baby girl.  It is my own design from start to finish.
I am setting the reserve price at $50.00.  Ladies, that is a steal.
Believe me when I say, the fabric alone cost more than that.
You have my word that the entire amount earned will be given to Action Kivu.  I will keep nothing for myself, not even postage for sending the winner her quilt.
To place a bid, just leave a comment with your amount and make sure I have a way to contact you if you win.  Bidding will close at midnight on August 23rd.
I don't know why, but I'm insanely nervous about this.  I guess we'll see what happens.
Please be generous.  It's a good cause. Tell your friends.

Pardon My Language

Dear random person who stole my credit card number, tried to charge $14,000 to my account, forced me to close the account, notify/change all my automatic bill pays and be without a credit card until the new one is FedEx-ed to me:

YOU SUCK!
